Introduction To Herding
(A Four Part Series of Group Lessons)
Leaning Tree Cattle Dogs will be offering a four-week course, made up of Group Lessons at a total cost of $50.00. This series is open to any herding breed of dog and any handler level.
Farmers
and Ranchers have utilized Stock Dogs for many years to assist them in
day-to-day tasks around the farm or ranch, tasks might be a simple as guarding
an open gate preventing cattle from escaping to gathering up the sheep and
taking them to a new pasture. Stock
Dogs perform these tasks by utilizing their natural instincts combined with
commands that have been trained to them.
This
series of lessons that will cover everything you need to know and understand in
order to train your stock dog to be a useful partner utilizing his bred in
herding instincts. Each week we will
build on the previous week, this program has been developed to allow all breeds
of herding dogs and handlers to succeed, whether you just want to work to have
a better relationship with your dog or learn the basic requirements in order to
have a useful stock dog that can be useful on the farm or even participate in
herding tests or trials.
We
will be going over all areas of livestock handling, discussing the flight zone,
balance and proper livestock handling techniques, you will see and participate
in demonstrations on sheep and ducks and then be offered the opportunity to
practice what you saw demonstrated with your dog.
The lesson series will be limited to Six (6) Handler/Dog combinations, only one dog per handler. The lesson series will be cancelled in the event we get less then Four (4) Handler/Dog combinations, and all paid fees will be refunded, there will be no refunds for cancellations. Substitutions will only be allowed for the entire series. The series can be repeated at a different time and/or day upon request by securing the required number of participants. You will need to have a sturdy leash and good flat buckle collar (Flexi-Leads and choke collars of any kind will not be allowed), a crate for your dog for when he is not working is also suggested, please bring a lawn chair and proper footwear. We will be working inside if weather dictates, but plan on working outside.
