The Iowa Sheep and Wool Festival trial was great fun!
Wayne and Deb worked their hearts out to put it all together. Bob supplied the
sheep and made up fun/challenging courses for all three levels. A HUGE thanks to
all that helped work the trial to keep it running, especially the stock
handlers! It was nice to see Joanna and Julia from MN and Nyle
from MO round out the entries for a total of 29 runs, including a junior handler
that did a super job. Watch out for
Andrew Davis, Mike's son, as he handles Sugar in future trials; it's a
treat! Jeta and I made a mess of our first P/N run, struggling
to drive and steer at the same time without flipping the sheep back. Ecko, my
dog with the world's weakest outrun, managed to get around her sheep sent from
my feet(...the part I fretted most about) Together we put her sheep thru the
three obstacles in under the five minute course time. Even with our messy pen
work we eked out a win in the novice class. Wayne debuted with Jake (the same dog that Deb trained
and ran in Novice last year) in Open and laid down a beautiful, calm, smooth run
that might have won the class if they had only managed to complete the shed on
the first try! Deb also had a very nice run with Vicki her newly acquired, old
veteran dog in P/N. Bob won the lion's share of the awards in Open with Tip and
Paws taking first and second place. Deb will have to post the actual
results...that's as far as my memory stretches. Congrats to ALL!!! Thank you, Mary for giving everyone a great
update!!! Wayne's got his work cut out for him trying to figure out how to
operate Jake's shed buttons, it will be interesting to see how long it takes for
him to get the hang of it.

I wanted to take a little time to update everyone on the state of the club and plans that are in the works. The 2008 season is in the record books, congratulations to all our high point handler/dog combinations. A quick review of the books revealed a loss of just under $500 for the 2008 season which is pretty consistent with previous years. In an effort to reduce our annual loss the BOD has implemented a 5% fee to all events that wish to be sanctioned with IHDA, sanctioning provides the event with advertising on the IHDA Website, Entry Forms in the Newsletter along with Liability Insurance and our Livestock Loss Policy.
I am in the process of negotiating contracts for both the Adel Wool and Sheep Festival and the North Iowa Fair to produce trials and demonstrations at their events, I am planning on both these trials and demonstrations to be produced by IHDA, so, we have an opportunity to generate some extra revenue if the trials are well attended and managed. In turn we need membership participation, both in the form of entries and also volunteers. We will need help from members to take entries and memberships, score keepers, line judges, gate workers, course set up along with people that can help to set out and sort sheep. At this point I am planning both trials to be point/time sheep trials with added money in both the Open and Pro-Novice Divisions. We also welcome class sponsorships via product or cash donations to increase the prize pool, sponsors will get a link on the IHDA website, advertising on the event fliers and recognition at the event. If you know of an individual or a corporation that would be interested in sponsoring classes in either or both of the events please let me know.
The final paperwork is being compiled for our name change and to secure our Non-Profit Corporation status, hopefully it will be completed and approved in time for these events so that the donations will be tax deductible for all contributors. We will be operating under the name of Iowa Stock Dog Association (ISDA) as soon as our corporate charter is filed with the State of Iowa. We will continue to use the IHDA.net domain name and website until further notice. I am waiting on a few loose ends to get tied up with the accountant before scheduling our year end business meeting, new by-laws are being drafted to meet the Non-Profit requirements which may require a change in the terms and number of board members serving. Hopefully, Old Man winter will cut us a break and we can have a fun day/pot luck in conjunction with the meeting.
If we as a club are successful in producing a few events that generate additional revenue for the club, solicit new memberships and encourage event producers to sanction their events with IHDA/ISDA we will be able to generate a positive cash flow. This cash flow will enable us to offer more benefits to all the members, in addition to closing the gap in our annual budget we would have the ability to offer club produced and subsidized clinics/seminars, produce a year end banquet or possibly a year end finals trial. As a condition of our Non-Profit status we will be making a donation at the end of each season to another charity, non-breed specific suggestions to date have been the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, The Rabies Challenge Fund and K9COLA, Citizens for Off-Leash Areas. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. When everything is complete your membership and participation with ISDA will also support another Non-Profit Charities.
It's difficult to imagine that just in a couple of months the snow and cold will yield to green grass and warmer temperatures.

IHDA 20th Anniversary!!!!
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Iowa Herding Dog Assoc., above is the registered Logo of the Association, originally filed with the state January 15th, 1988
Founding Meeting Minutes
Iowa Herding Dog Association
Founding Meeting
Residence: Richard/Cynthia Sadecky
The first meeting to form the Iowa Herding Dog Association was held August 2, 1987 at the home of Richard and Cynthia Sadecky. The first order of business was to elect officers. The following officers were elected:
President: Cynthia Sadecky
Vice President: John Klein
Secretary: Susan Thorp
Treasurer: Lois Gray

Les Simons volunteered to do the newsletter.
Advertising, promotion and the logo were discussed. Melanie Snyder desinged several logos for the association. The members present chose on to represent the club. It was then decided that the association would invest in hats and t-shirts....
It was decided that hats and shirts would be red. The logo design would be in white background. Lettering would be in red. Iowa will be outlined. Border Collie blaze to remain in white. The logo used on the t-shirt will be the same size as the one located on the hat. The logo on the t-shirt will be on the left side of the shirt.
The By-laws and Constitution were discussed. Melanie moved that the association accept the By-laws and Constitution.. Nate seconded the motion. The Motion was approved.
An application form was developed for the club by Les Simons. She presented the form. The form was accepted.
The following are charter members of the club: John & Jeri Klein, Melanie Snyder, Richard E Cynthia Sadecky, Les and Leroy Simons, Frank & Lois Gray, Nate & Dolly Brown, Bob Vest and Vern & Susan Thorp.
It was decided to hold a clinic on September 27th at the Sedeckys. This will be the first event sponsored by the association. Bob Vest will instruct the clinic.
The meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
